A richly textured Velvet Malachite specimen from the Shilu Copper Mine, displaying deep, saturated green botryoidal formations with a soft, velvety surface lustre. The specimen exhibits the characteristic silky appearance that gives “Velvet Malachite” its name.
The rounded sprays of Malachite create a gentle sheen over the surfaces, highlighting the radial formation and depth of colour.
The Shilu Copper Mine in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, China, is a well-known copper deposit dating back to the Han Dynasty, that achieved global acclaim in the 1980s to the 1990s for producing some of the finest, museum worthy secondary copper minerals, such as high quality Malachite and Azurite. The mine was exhausted and therefore abandoned in 1998, with occasional reopening for specimen collecting due to the historical value of the location and the pieces produced.
Formed through the oxidation of primary copper ores, Malachite develops in cavities and fractures where copper-rich fluids interact with carbonate-bearing rocks. This environment allows for the formation of botryoidal and fibrous aggregates, which are responsible for the smooth, velvet-like texture seen in the finest specimens. Material from this locality is particularly appreciated for its rich colour and aesthetic surface development.
Velvet Malachite is prized for its rich colour, tactile surface, and fibrous form. Specimens from the Shilu Copper Mine are especially desirable for their depth of colour, fine botryoidal texture and provenance, making them standout display pieces.
Carpe recommends: a truly life changing stone in our eyes, a powerful crystal for self-confidence and breaking through mental barriers.
