Description

Fluorite specimen from the Bull Vein at the Lady Annabella Mine, Weardale, displaying beautifully developed cubic crystals in unusual blue/green tones along with the characteristic yellow in the centres creating visual depth. Particularly colourful, fine zoning can be seen – again unusual for Blue Vein specimens – in green, blue, purple and yellow, as well as displaying some daylight UV reaction, turning an almost denim blue tone.

Locality

The Lady Annabella Mine is UKMV’s specimen-mining operation at the former Eastgate Quarry in Weardale, County Durham. The Bull Vein was one of the principal areas worked during the early Lady Annabella mining, with the vein producing an exceptional variety of Fluorite colours, zonation and crystal forms.

The Bull Vein was named after Fred Bull, a well-known mineral collector who alerted UKMV to the presence of good yellow Fluorite in the previously unnamed vein. UKMV describes the vein as a sinuous mineralised structure where the colour and zoning of the Fluorite can change dramatically over very short distances.

The crystals occur within cavities and breccias associated with faulting and hydrothermal mineralisation. UKMV records the Bull Vein as producing single cubic and elongated crystals, interpenetrant twins and composite crystals, with some crystals reaching several centimetres and sometimes displaying complex multi-colour zoning.

Key Features

• Fluorite from the Bull Vein
• Beautifully developed cubic crystals
• Intricate colour zoning and phantom growth
• Highly sought-after UKMV provenance

Why Collectors Value This Specimen

The Bull Vein is an important chapter in the modern history of British Fluorite collecting, producing an extraordinary range of colours, zoning and crystal forms from the Lady Annabella Mine. Its combination of sharp cubic habit, exceptional and complex colour zoning makes Bull Vein Fluorite particularly desirable, representing some of the finest contemporary UK Fluorite specimens recovered by UKMV.
