Description

A remarkable Ram’s Horn Selenite specimen from the Taouima Mine, Morocco, displaying one of the most unusual crystal habits found in the mineral world. Rather than growing as straight blades, these delicate Gypsum crystals naturally curl into graceful spirals, waves, and horn-like forms, each finished with a sparkling drusy surface that catches the light beautifully.

The elegant, sculptural growth gives these specimens an almost organic appearance. No two pieces are ever alike, making every specimen a completely unique work of natural crystal growth.

Locality

The Taouima Mine, near Nador in northeastern Morocco, is renowned for producing these highly distinctive Ram’s Horn Selenite specimens. The locality has become one of the world’s best-known sources of this rare Gypsum growth habit, prized by collectors for its unusual form and exceptional aesthetics.

Unlike typical Selenite, which develops as straight, bladed crystals, Ram’s Horn Selenite is thought to have formed as calcium sulphate-rich waters slowly precipitated Gypsum within open cavities. Subtle changes in crystal growth conditions including fluctuations in mineral saturation, water chemistry, available growth space, and crystal orientation – are believed to have influenced the crystals as they developed, producing their characteristic twisted, curling forms. The softness of Gypsum also allows these growing crystals to accommodate slight changes in direction, resulting in the graceful spirals that make this material so distinctive.

These extraordinary specimens demonstrate just how diverse crystal growth can be when geological conditions align over long periods of time.
