Pyrolusite – Imini Mine, Morocco

An exceptional Pyrolusite specimen from the renowned Imini Mine in Morocco. Displaying radiating crystal growth with a brilliant silver-grey metallic lustre. Description

A remarkable specimen of Pyrolusite displaying incredible radiating crystal formations with an intense gun metal to silver lustre. Individual crystals catch and reflect the light beautifully, creating an almost shimmering appearance across the specimens fan-like formation.

Pyrolusite is commonly encountered as matte black fibrous crusts, massive material and botryoidal aggregates, making specimens displaying this highly lustrous, well-defined crystalline appearance particularly striking.

The combination of intricate radial growth, exceptional metallic lustre and dark colouration gives this material an almost otherworldly appearance – and makes it immediately recognisable amongst more typical forms of Pyrolusite.

Locality

The Imini Mine is located in Ouarzazate Province, Morocco, south of the High Atlas Mountains, within one of the country’s most important manganese-producing districts.

The manganese deposits at Imini were discovered in 1918, with mining beginning during the early 20th century. The extensive deposits occur primarily within Cretaceous carbonate rocks and contain a complex assemblage of manganese minerals, with Pyrolusite being one of the important manganese oxides found within the district.

For mineral collectors, Imini is particularly renowned for producing some of the world’s best Pyrolusite specimens.
