Description

An exceptional British Fluorite specimen from the historic GillHeads Mine (Gill Heads Mine), Skyreholme, North Yorkshire, displaying unusually large, beautifully developed cubic crystals (upto 5cm) in a delicate palette of pale lilac to near-clear Fluorite. The cubes feature striking inky deep indigo-purple zoning, concentrated towards the edges and creating dramatic contrast beneath the lighter crystal interiors.

Adding further interest are sparkling Chalcopyrite inclusions, visible within the Fluorite and providing subtle metallic flashes against the translucent crystals. The combination of substantial crystal size, excellent cubic form, intense colour zoning and sulphide inclusions makes this an especially impressive example of Gill Heads Fluorite.

Locality

Gillheads Mine, near Skyreholme in North Yorkshire, was originally worked as a lead mine before later becoming one of Yorkshire’s productive fluorspar mines. Fluorite is the principal mineral for which the locality is known, with Calcite, Dolomite and Chalcopyrite also documented from the mine.

Gill Heads is particularly appreciated for its cubic Fluorite crystals, with documented specimens reaching around 2 cm and examples from the locality noted for clear to colourless crystals and distinctive purple colouration. The combination of pale, transparent Fluorite with deeper purple zoning gives these Yorkshire specimens a particularly attractive appearance, while the presence of Chalcopyrite adds an additional layer of mineralogical interest.
