A distinctive Dragon Scale Baryte specimen displaying broad, tabular Baryte crystals with stepped, overlapping growth that evokes the texture of reptilian scales – the feature that gives this material its name. The crystals exhibit excellent lustre with a clean, silvery-grey to pale tan or amber hue. The tabular crystals are well defined, with crisp edges featuring phantoms and inclusions of glittering Marcasite.
Morocco’s Khénifra Province, is an area known for producing high-quality Baryte specimens with excellent crystals in a variety of formations. The region’s mineralisation is part of the larger Tafilalt plateau geology, where hydrothermal fluids migrated through fracture networks, allowing calcite and Baryte to crystallise in open vugs and veins. Dragon Scale Baryte from this district is particularly prized for its aesthetic tabular growth and clean crystal faces.
Dragon Scale Baryte is a distinctive and sought-after variant of Baryte due to its unique textural surface and broad, plate-like habit. Its sculptural form and visual depth make it attractive both for mineral collections and as a display piece. Specimens from Bel Aouam remain highly regarded within the mineral community for their form, quality, and characteristic growth, representing some of the best examples of tabular Baryte from Morocco.
