Description

Goethite Included Quartz is a fascinating variety of quartz containing inclusions of the iron oxyhydroxide mineral goethite. These inclusions commonly appear as fanned, acicular, radial, or needle-like formations, creating intricate internal landscapes within the clear to smoky quartz host.

Often misidentified as cacoxenite; however, cacoxenite is a separate mineral with no relation to goethite and is yet to be confirmed as an inclusion in quartz.

The inclusions formed when iron-rich minerals were present during quartz crystal growth. As silica-rich fluids crystallised into quartz, oxidised iron precipitated as goethite and became trapped within the growing crystal. In some specimens, the goethite crystals continue to grow beyond the quartz, occasionally protruding from the surface.

Goethite inclusions can appear black, bronze, gold, or sometimes red, producing striking contrast against the quartz. Each specimen displays completely unique patterns and structures, making them particularly popular for cabochons and with collectors.

Locality

Goethite-included quartz can be found worldwide; however, Ouarzazate Province, Drâa-Tafilalet Region, Morocco, is known for producing particularly beautiful and impressive specimens.
