About This Piece:

A superb, sharply defined Fluorite specimen from the renowned La Viesca Mine, Asturias, Spain — specifically dating from the classic 1979–1980 production, a period revered for yielding some of the mine’s most iconic material. This piece displays the unmistakable La Viesca aesthetic: transparent to translucent crystals, terraced formations and cloud-like zoning. Its crisp cubic habit, mirror-like faces and internal glow exemplify why early-production La Viesca fluorites are so highly coveted. Specimens of this calibre have become notably scarce, as the mine’s most productive years ended long ago and surviving pieces now circulate through advanced collections.

Geological & Historical Importance:

La Viesca sits within the famed La Collada Mining Area, celebrated for producing some of Europe’s most aesthetic Fluorite specimens. The late 1970s to early 1980s represented a golden era for the mine, yielding pockets with exceptional clarity, large isolated cubes, razor-sharp geometry and distinctive colour zoning ranging from soft greens to lavender, blue, or bi-coloured combinations.

The 1979–1980 period is particularly significant: it marked the discovery of several pockets that became legendary among collectors for their gemmy transparency, silky phantoms and fascinating modified growths. Mining has long since ceased, and access to the underground workings is no longer possible. As a result, authentic early-era La Viesca pieces are both finite and increasingly rare, especially those preserving pristine faces, minimal damage and ice-like clarity.

Why Collectors Value This Specimen:

  • Classic 1979–1980 La Viesca production, among the mine’s most celebrated years

  • Highly aesthetic sharp cubic habit with exceptional clarity

  • From one of Europe’s most iconic and collectible fluorite localities

  • Increasingly scarce due to mine closure and limited surviving top-grade material
