Description:

A striking Calcite specimen from the historic Sweetwater Mine, Missouri, USA; exhibiting the highly distinctive “Dragon Scale” crystal habit for which this locality is celebrated. The specimen features overlapping, sharply formed Calcite crystals with textured faces that create a shimmering, scale-like surface across the piece. The crystals display a bright, reflective lustre, enhancing the intricate surface detail and dark phantoms within. Calcite from the Sweetwater Mine is admired for its clarity, range of shade from pale cream to moody black, and exceptional crystal definition.

Locality Significance:

The Sweetwater Mine lies within Missouri’s renowned Viburnum Trend, a prolific mining district known for producing world-class lead and zinc ore minerals, alongside highly collectible Calcite. ‘Dragon Scale’ Calcite is a distinctive growth form associated with Sweetwater Mine and is sought after by collectors for its uncommon habit and strong aesthetic appeal.

Calcite from the Sweetwater Mine formed as a late-stage mineral during the evolution of the ore system, crystallising within open cavities and fractures associated with the primary sulphide mineralisation. Changes in fluid chemistry, temperature, and growth conditions led to the development of a wide range of crystal habits, including the distinctive “Dragon Scale” form, characterised by overlapping, stepped crystal faces.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive ‘Dragon Scale’ Calcite crystal formation
  • Bright, reflective lustre with layered, textured faces
  • Classic Sweetwater Mine locality
  • Dark grey Chalcopyrite phantoms

  • Represents a classic and recognisable Sweetwater Calcite habit
