Description

Aragonite stalactite slice from Ighoud, Morocco, also known as Popcorn Aragonite, revealing intricate, concentric banding formed over thousands of years. When cut and polished, these natural formations display striking layered patterns reminiscent of tree rings, often mistaken for fossilised wood.

Each slice is completely unique, with warm earthy tones and organic patterning that create a strong visual and textural appeal. The polished face contrasts with the natural outer edge, highlighting the raw formation alongside its refined interior.

Locality

These Aragonite formations originate from cave systems in the Ighoud region of Morocco, where mineral-rich water slowly drips through rock over extended periods of time. As each drop reaches the ceiling of a cavity, minerals begin to crystallise and deposit, gradually building downward to form stalactites. Meanwhile, falling droplets can form stalagmites on the cave floor.

Over time, this process creates layered mineral growth — formed drop by drop — resulting in the distinctive internal banding seen when the stalactites are sliced. Material from this locality is well known for its bold patterns and warm natural tones.
