February Birthstone: Amethyst

We’re just about to wave goodbye to January, generally viewed as one of the most trying months of the year, so no doubt there are countless of you out there who simply can’t wait to see February and turn their thoughts to spring.

As well as bringing with it an uptick in the weather, with the days getting longer and the weather warming up a touch, February is most welcome in our eyes here at Carpe Crystals because it also means that it’s time for amethyst to well and truly shine as the birthstone for the month.

Amethyst really is a wonderful crystal, characterised by its beautiful deep purple tones that have seen it be an incredibly popular jewellery option for thousands of years. You’ll see that the ancient Egyptians prized it most highly, carving the gemstones into amulets, while royalty during the Middle Ages turned to the stone because its colour represented nobility.

It can be spotted sparkling away in crowns, on thrones, in sceptres, in religious iconography… the list goes on! As such, if you’re lucky enough to be born in February, you’ll find yourself in excellent company indeed!

As for what amethyst has come to represent over the years, it’s believed by many to be a healing stone. In fact, its very name comes from the Greek word ‘amethystos’, which can be translated to mean ‘not drunk’… which is why it’s often referred to as the Sober Stone.

Many choose to wear this particular gem because they believe it can help promote a sense of calm and inner peace, delivering clear-headed thinking and helping them to keep their wits about them, no matter what.
