Lots of people know what their birthstone is – sapphire for September babies, topaz for November kids, and amethyst for those born in February. Diamond is the traditional birthstone for April children, but did you know the crystal quartz is also associated with the month as well?
While diamond is famous for being the rarest and most precious of stones, quartz is the opposite. In fact, it is the most abundant mineral in the world.
It can be found in most acid igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, with the crystal being made from a combination of silicon and oxygen.
You will recognise quartz as being colourless or opaque, though its colour can change, depending on its composition. For instance, amethyst is a type of quartz that has developed its purple hue by being mixed with other minerals, such as iron.
Quartz has a particularly interesting history, stemming from ancient times. It is thought the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians used the crystal as potent talismans, while it derived its name from the ancient Greek word krystallos, which means ‘ice’, due to its icy appearance.
According to ancient Japan, however, quartz was the breath of a white dragon, as a symbol of perfection.
As well as being used as decoration and jewellery, it has been considered a healing and energising crystal for centuries.
That is why it is still incredibly popular today, being used as part of meditation and manifesting. It is also utilised by those with chronic medical conditions, from physical problems like arthritis, to mental health challenges, such as depression.
If you have a long-term health problem and want to benefit from the healing power of quartz, it is worth getting a box of crystals, as they could be the answer you are looking for.
